Daffodils Campaign 2023. Civilians
For the 11th time, the POLIN Museum will be organising Daffodils socio-educational campaign under the slogan “Remembering Together”. The Daffodils campaign will also be dedicated to the situation of civilians living in the ghetto during the uprising.
On the streets of Warsaw, volunteers will be handing out paper daffodils – a symbol of the collective memory of the ghetto uprising. In 2023, for the first time, daffodils will be handed out by volunteers in five Polish cities: Łódź, Kraków, Wrocław, Białystok and Lublin. In each of the aforementioned cities, the POLIN Museum has established partnerships with institutions with whose support it will recruit and prepare volunteers to hand out daffodils on 19 April: Grodzka Gate – NN Theatre in Lublin, the Marek Edelman Dialogue Centre in Łódź, the Urban Memory Foundation in Wrocław, JCC Kraków and the Zamenhof Centre in Białystok. Letters have also been sent to the mayors of the above cities and the mayor of Warsaw, asking for patronage over the Daffodils Campaign. Recruitment of volunteers from schools and individual volunteers will take place from 10 January to 13 February.
A promotional campaign is also planned in public space, traditional media and on the Internet with the participation of Daffodils Campaign Ambassadors – representatives of the world of culture, art and sport. As part of a package of educational materials prepared on the basis of a book written by Hanna Krall, “Zdążyć przed Panem Bogiem” [Shielding the Flame], the POLIN Museum will produce an animated film for students in grades 7-8 of primary school and secondary school students. For younger children, short stories will be prepared and published by Katarzyna Ryrych and Katarzyna Jackowska-Enemuo. There are plans to record audio versions of the stories to be read by the Campaign Ambassadors, Aleksandra Żebrowska and Bartosz Gelner. All educational materials will be accompanied by lesson plans to help teachers conduct lessons around the anniversary of the ghetto uprising. Recruitment of schools, libraries and cultural institutions wishing to take part in the campaign will begin on 10 January and end on 14 April.
In Warsaw, a mural dedicated to civilians who were in the Warsaw Ghetto during the uprising will be painted at the Centrum metro station as a result of workshops for volunteers of the Daffodils Campaign. The mural will be on display from 9 to 23 April 2023.
An online programme accompanying the Daffodils Campaign is also planned and will be made available to the general public via the polin.pl website and the Museum’s social media channels. Preparations are underway for a film with Professor Barbara Engelking, who will describe the situation of the civilian population during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, and a screening of the film Shielding the Flame at the POLIN Museum Auditorium, which a meeting with Hanna Krall and Mariusz Szczygieł will follow.
Event duration: April 19, 2023; 8.00.a.m.- 8.00 p.m.
